Hit Longer and Straighter Shots while Working on Consistency
Written by: Kris Lim

How many of you hit the ball great one day and go out the next day and it's like you've never played the game before? If this sounds like you read this week's tip, which touches on how to gain consistency, resulting in longer and straighter shots.

When we all watch the guys playing on tour, the game looks very easy. Their swings look so effortless that we get inspired and say to ourselves, "That looks easy, I should be able to do that." But, when we get out on the range the next day it's not that easy.  Here's a secret that we all know but don't really focus on and this week's secret is swinging within yourself.

Sounds familiar right? Some people say swing 80% or swing in balance, it all means swing at a speed that doesn't feel forced and can be controlled.  If you don't believe the importance of this ask yourself this question, How many of you have said to yourself that you will go up 1 club and swing smooth and bomb the ball over the green? I know I have. Here is more evidence for you, I was on the launch monitor months ago and wanted to see the change in distance relative to swing speed.  My results showed that at a 125 mph club head speed I hit the ball 305 but when I swung at a speed of 110 mph I hit it 305.  This is possible because of a stat called smash factor.  The smash factor is how square you hit the ball on the club face and when I swung at a higher rate of speed I'm not able to hit the ball "on the screws" like I did when I swung at a lower speed.

When you want to hit the ball further swing slower and you will hit the ball further.  Golf is a game of finesse and if you try to force anything in this game you will do the opposite of what you want to do, guaranteed!

Here's how you practice this....

Go on the range and find a speed that you can hit balls with and control.  When I say control, it means, the ability to swing the club back and through while holding your finish. This is the best tip my coach has given me, to pose for the cameras.  When you swing within yourself and hold your finish it is very hard to hit a ball far off line.

Another way to practice this is to tee up iron shots about a half an inch off the ground and swing. This will help you create a more flowing sing. Most people try to chop at the ball when it is on the ground and thus, become off balance.

Try these tips and watch your misses become better and better.

Isn't this game a game of misses? Swing within yourself and stop loosing careless strokes due to forcing a swing. Swing within yourself and save those strokes!
